Blue Jays’ Edwin Encarnacion suspended one game for physical contact with umpire

TORONTO — Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion was suspended for one game by Major League Baseball on Sunday and fined an undisclosed amount for making contact with an umpire.

Encarnacion was ejected for the first time this season for arguing with Carapazza after being called out on strikes to end the first inning of Friday’s 19-inning, 2-1 loss to Cleveland. Encarnacion made contact with Carapazza’s left shoulder after being ejected.

“I was waiting for it,” said Encarnacion after Sunday’s 17-1 rout of Cleveland. “I mean I knew something was going to happen because supposedly I bumped into him so I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Encarnacion’s suspension was scheduled to be served Sunday afternoon as the Blue Jays concluded their four-game series with Cleveland.  However, Encarnacion has elected to appeal, putting the punishment in abeyance until the process is complete.

“Of course, for me, it was a no-brainer (to appeal), but I don’t know what’s going to happen with that,” said Encarnacion.

Manager John Gibbons came out to break up the argument between Encarnacion and Carapazza and was also ejected.

Later in the game, Carapazza ejected Toronto catcher Russell Martin for arguing balls and strikes. An irate Martin had to be restrained by bench coach DeMarlo Hale and third base coach Luis Rivera.

Following Friday’s defeat, Martin said Carapazza “just wasn’t very good today.”
