Young eager minds to be sparked by science at free learning event

Feb 1, 2019 | 2:32 PM

NANAIMO — There’s few things in the world as inquisitive and open to possibilities as a young mind.

Science Saturday, a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Island ConnectED school on Feb. 2, wants to harness that energy for good and show kids how amazing the world is.

“Science is all around us. We benefit from it every day, from the bread we eat for breakfast or the cars we drive,” outreach coordinator Stephanie Maasik told NanaimoNewsNOW.

This is the fifth year the Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society has hosted the event and Maasik said there will be plenty of new exhibits and experiments for eagerly returning budding scientists.

A hawk from the Raptors in the Duncan as well sea creatures from the Deep Bay Marine Field station will be on hand to spark excitement and interest.

“Starting that curiosity and interest when they’re young will really grow an appreciation for the world around us. That’s what science really boils down to. It’s asking questions and wanting to know more about the world around you. There’s going to be lots of hands on science for all ages.”

Admission is by donation and there’s no time limit for any families eager to see and learn everything.
