Clippers rise to the occasion with 2-1 win in Powell River

POWELL RIVER – The Clippers were at their best in a 2-1 win over the Kings on Saturday.

It was a tight defensive contest featuring strong goaltending, especially from Nanaimo goalie Jordan Naylor.

All the scoring came in a three minute span late in the first period.

Ethan Scardina opened the scoring on a close in chance on Mitch Adamyk before Rowan Miller tied the game on a shot from the right wing.

Scardina jammed home a power play goal with four seconds left in the first, which was the last goal of the night.

From then on chances were hard to come by, there wasn’t much room and players on both sides raised their battle level significantly.

There were very few mistakes in a game that featured high playoff intensity.

The final shots were 35-25 for the Kings with both teams having four power plays.

The only man advantage goal was Scardina’s game winner.

Saturday’s Three Stars were Ethan Scardina (2g), Jordan Naylor (34 saves), and Matt Rickard (0 points).

Nanaimo’s victory in Powell River was their first since Game 4 of the 2018 playoffs when Preston Brodziak scored the overtime winner.

This series is now a best of five affair with the Clippers having wrestled away home ice advantage.

Games three and four are back in Nanaimo on Monday and Tuesday at Frank Crane Arena.

Game 5 is slated for next Thursday back at the Hap Parker Arena.
