Another double gold weekend for VIU with wins at PACWEST basketball provincials

COQUITLAM — For a second straight weekend the VIU Mariners have won double gold at a PACWEST tournament.

Last weekend it was volleyball, this weekend it was basketball.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both entered the provincials as number one seeds and both won gold medals on Saturday.

With the teams getting byes into the semifinals, the Mariners got going on Friday night with the men easily handling the fifth seed Camosun 90-67.

Landon Radliff was named the Mariners game MVP for his 21 points and eight rebounds.

The gold medal game was a classic with VIU needing a buzzer beater from Tyus Barfoot to tie the game at 72-72 and force overtime against second seeded Douglas College.

From there the Mariners would not be denied prevailing 89-82 in the extra frame.

Radliff again won the MVP with 37 points and nine rebounds.

The VIU women had a dominant game Friday in their semifinal against the fifth seed from Langara.

They cruised to a 78-32 victory with Emma Platner taking home game MVP honours.

She had 15 points and three rebounds.

Saturday’s gold medal game was much tougher with VIU pulling out an 82-77 win over second seeded Capilano.

Shayce Johnston was the Mariners game MVP with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

VIU players were front and centre for the tournament awards as well.

Landon Radliff and Amber Lease both won tournament MVP awards while Tyus Barfoot, Shayce Johnston, and Emma Platner were PACWEST provincial all-stars.

For the CCAA Nationals the men have a short trip to the Mainland with Langara hosting while the women have a further trek with their championship being held in Sainte-Foy Quebec.

Both tournaments run from March 13-16.
