Youthful climate change rally asks politicians to fight for the future

NANAIMO — A global movement took over the lawn of Nanaimo City Hall to encourage more action against climate change.

Roughly 100 people, mainly secondary school and VIU students, waved hand-made signs and rallied on the lawn Friday. It was part of the global School Strike for Climate initiative, where similar events happened all over the world.

Dover Bay Secondary School student Megan Grimmer told NanaimoNewsNOW the many youthful faces in the crowd showed politicians and world leaders how important it is to fight for the future.

“If we don’t start making change now, we’re ruining the future for my generation and all the generations to come. There’s n going back if we don’t start making change now.”

On the local level, Grimmer said she’d like to see more accessible transit to help unclog the streets of cars, as well as policies about single use plastic bags and initiatives to promote more recycling.

“We’re all small people but together we can make a huge difference.”

Event organizer James Chumsa, a VIU student who’s organized numerous rallies across Nanaimo, said he was “stoked” to see so many new, young faces in the crowd.
