VIU honours top athletes at awards banquet

NANAIMO — The VIU Mariners held their awards banquet on Monday after a stellar year of PACWEST and CCAA competition.
 
In 2018-19 the Mariners captured double gold in CCAA volleyball, a men’s national basketball title, and a women’s provincial championship.
 
This week VIU named Harry Fayle as it’s Male Athlete of the Year, and Chantal Cumming as the Female Athlete of the Year.
 
Fayle is in his second year on the men’s basketball team and had a fantastic 18-19 season.

Cumming has part of the national champion volleyball team and just completed her fifth year at VIU.

The two Unsung Hero awards both went to volleyball players with Tova Rae and Jeff Webb accepting the awards.

Cara Dunlop (women’s soccer) and Ty Dvorack (men’s volleyball) were recognized as the top freshman athletes this season.
 
Commitment, leadership and performance are the criteria for the President’s Awards.
 
They were selected by the VIU coaches with university president Ralph Nilson presenting the awards to these students:
 
Lexi Fawcett – Women’s Soccer
Griffin Douglas – Men’s Soccer
Joivin Joy – Badminton
Alex Foston – Golf
Amanda Dobbyn – Women’s Volleyball
Isaac Bevis – Men’s Volleyball
Kiara Johnston – Women’s Basketball
Emmanuel Degal – Men’s Basketball
 
The Top Student Athlete Awards are based on having the highest grade point average over the past three terms.
 
Nicholas Xylinas and Madeline Hart from the basketball program were the winners.
 
In all 21 students were given Academic Excellence Awards for holding a 3.7 GPA of the past three terms.
   
VIU athletes and coaches were also recognized at the CCAA and PACWEST levels.
