Nanaimo Hornets women’s rugby team to host BC semifinal

Apr 26, 2019 | 2:28 PM

NANAIMO – The Senior Women’s Hornets rugby team has earned their way to the Division 1 semifinals.

Nanaimo handily beat the Brit Lions 77-0 to wrap up league play two weeks ago with a 5-2 record.

The opponent for coach Chad Pinda’s side in Saturday’s semi is the Comox Kickers.

The Comox squad also finished the season at 5-2 after a win over SFU in their final match.

Abbotsford is the number one seed heading into the playoffs at 6-0 and they will host Cowichan/Westshore in the other semifinal.

The Hornets Rugby Club will be holding their annual awards banquet on Saturday night, so a playoff win for the women’s side would certainly add to the festivities, which begin at 5pm at the Rugby Club.

The playoff game itself starts at 11:15 a.m. at May Bennett Pioneer Park.

If the Hornets win their semifinal they’ll play the winner of the Abbotsford versus Cowichan/Westshore match on May 4 at Burnaby Lake.
