UPDATE: Power restored for roughly 2,500 Nanaimo-area homes

NANAIMO — Nearly 2,500 Nanaimo-area homes were without power Saturday afternoon as high winds caused damage throughout the area.

BC Hydro reported a large outage in the Uplands, Pleasant Valley and north Nanaimo regions around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.

Power was restored late Saturday afternoon.

The north end outage involved 2,200 BC Hydro customers, with smaller outages due to downed wires affecting south Nanaimo and Cedar.

Roughly 1,000 customers were also without power on Gabriola Island.

The winds were high enough to cancel two ferry sailings along the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route.

Environment Canada reported winds along the water reached 80 km/h.
