VI Raiders hold spring camp May 3-5 in Nanaimo

May 1, 2019 | 2:19 PM

NANAIMO — The VI Raiders take a key step towards their 2019 season with the team’s annual spring camp.

There will be sessions Friday through Sunday at the NDSS Turf Field.

Sunday’s inter squad game from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m will be the highlight, especially for fans who want an early look at Nanaimo’s junior football team.

It was an offseason of change for the club with offensive line coach Curtis Vizza being promoted to head coach and defensive line coach Josh Williams taking on the general managers role.

Both Vizza and Williams were part of Raiders championship teams as players.

Former head coach Doug Hocking stepped down in November but has since resurfaced as an offensive consultant with the Westshore Rebels.

Ex GM Glenn Cook is still with the team, but will focus more on the business side of the operation.

The Raiders are coming off a 6-4 campaign last season and will start 2019 with a road game against the Cullen Cup winning Langley Rams on August 3.

Langley also beat VI in the BCFC semifinals last year 37-26.

The first home game of 2019 at Caledonia Park won’t be until August 17 with a visit from the Kamloops Broncos.

Recently the Raiders announced the return of some key veterans with Jake Laberge, North Rainey, Gevhahn McNally-Hardisty, and Jeremie Cheng re-committing to the club.

Off the field the Raiders are holding their annual golf tournament June 21st at Cottonwood Golf Club, with a dinner and silent auction to follow.

Details about the golf tournament are up on the Raiders facebook page.
