How to pick the right travelling partner

NANAIMO — Why is it that even beautiful friendships, or otherwise happy marriages, sometimes turn stressful on holidays? If you travel with a person who has a different idea than you do about what a makes a great trip, and you don’t know that in advance, you may end up wishing you’d stayed home!

As travellers, we need to better understand exactly why we travel so we can plan more satisfying holidays.

NANAIMO — In case you missed my first column on Nanaimo's visitor economy, here’s the takeaways:

Visitors play a significant, positive and rapidly growing role in Nanaimo's economic well-being. Visitors aren’t just driving through Nanaimo anymore. During the summer of 2016, each visitor group (half were couples) stayed nearly a week, and spent well over $500 per day.

That part is great for everyone.

If You Live in Nanaimo, You’re Richer Than You Think

NANAIMO — As a Nanaimo resident, you are a stakeholder in B.C.’s $15 billion industry — and it’s growing at a record pace here on the Island.

It’s not’s the visitor economy.

1,200 B.C. businesses were recently asked to rank the importance of the province's primary industries over the next five to 10 years. Fifty-two per cent placed tourism at the very top. The industry currently provides 127,000 jobs for over 9,000 businesses in B.C.
